Power BI Report Server Compatiable Power BI Desktop Versions

Hi there,

We are currently running Report Server Version 15.0.2.557 and would like to know how do we go about checking which versions of Power BI Desktop are compatible with this Report Server version. If we create a dashboard in a later version of Power BI Desktop and try to upload it - it gives an error around and does not allow the upload of the dashboard?

Power BI Report Server (PBIRS) updates are currently released each Jan, May and Sep. With each update comes a new version of Power BI Desktop for Report Server (PBIDRS) that supports the new features in that update. 

Older versions of PBIDRS can work with newer versions of PBIRS. 

Newer versions of PBIDRS CANNOT work with previous versions of PBIRS. 

Your PBIRS version is Aug-2018. I will conclude you are using the latest PBIDRS (Jan-2019).

The August 18 PBIRS is not compatible with October 18 or later Desktop versions. I think this is due to model changes.

However Jan and the just release May versions should be compatible (minus any newer or preview features).

So if your having issues try and get updated to at least the Jan 19 PBIRS version.

Don't forget to save any Desktop files using the PBIRS Desktop version (that goes with your server) before you upload. Files saved in normal desktop versions are not compatible.
