Power BI On-Premise Report Server Upgrade Broken version link

Hi,

There is a version chain broken between Power BI Report server on-premise version.

We are currently using Power BI report server on-premise Aug 2017 Preview version. The latest upgrade available as per below link is directly related to June 2017 GA version.

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/reportserver-release-notes/

We are specifically looking for Sharepoint List Schedule Refresh or Live/DirectQuery. This feature is currently not available in August 2017 preview but it is mentioned as supported in the latest update Oct 2017.

Why is August 2017 preview not included in Upgrade plan?

What would be the steps to move to Oct 2017 version from Aug 2017?

Are there any features missing in this version that are already available in August 2017 preview?

Directly running upgrade is not helping as the reports manager portal is going offline [HTTP 503 error is seen]. I had to uninstall and reinstall Report Server from scratch to have it restored.

Any clarifications provided are greatly helpful.

Regards,

Khalid

Upgrade from Aug. Preview to Oct GA release is supported and should work, do you have any more infomation on the errors you were seeing? Also we there any specific errors in the logs? As far as Features the August preview was just an early preview release for the Excel and Embedded Model functionality in the server. We wanted to get early version out to get customer feedback on it. The Oct release contains the final version or GA version of those bits as well as some new funcitonality (e.g. URL Params, Scheduled Data Refersh, OData DataSets ...). The preview version was never meant to be used in a produciton environment since it was only availabe in an evaluation edition, that said upgrade should work.

Matt M.

Hello Matt,

Thank you for the information.

We are evaluating the Power BI On-Premise Preview version in our development setup.

When I upgrade Report Server from Aug 2017 to Oct 2017 version, installer is completing the upgrade successfully but when I access RS portal, it shows me "HTTP 503. Service not available" message in browser. I tried to change name of Virtual directory as suggested in some discussions related to same problem, but that did not work for me.

Also, When I try to install the PBI Desktop of Oct 2017, it shows me message that a newer version of PBI Desktop is already installed. Installer is not allowing this when Aug 2017 is installed.

Please let me know if you want to have any other information.

Regards,

Khalid

Can you check the help about screen in Desktop and let me know the specific which version you have installed? Also for Report Server can you check the Logs specifically the RSPortalXXX and ReportingServicesXXX logs to see if there are any errors? One last quetion what URL are you trying to access for the Portal and do you have any of versions of SSRS installed on the machine?

For accessing Portal I'm using http://localhost/Reports. It is configured to use port 80.

I see below messages in logs.

Version Shown when opening Power bi desktop is "2.49.4831.801 64-bit (August 2017)".

Matt,

Please ignore the issue. Thanks for helping.

I downloaded the October 2017 exe files which was published on Nov 1, 2017 and everything is working fine now. We are going to check Scheduled Data Refresh for Sharepoint List (On-Premise Setup). Will post results ASAP.

Edit:

Scheduled Refresh is working fine. Only one issue remained after upgrade. Which is all the data sources respective to report got reset. Now we need to manually open each report in Power bi Desktop, save and close it to work in report server.

Currently I do not see an option in Power BI Desktop to configure with data source from Report Server. Is there a way to use Data Sources same like we do in SSRS reports?
