Power BI Gateway installation failing due to an error

Hi there,

i am trying to install the gateway on my system and getting an error as Error 1335: The cabinet file 'media1.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.

I tried downloading the file again and see if that solves this.

Hi @gautampruthi  ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community forum.

You're encountering Error 1335 during Power BI Gateway installation, which typically means the installer package is either corrupt, incomplete, or being blocked during installation. Since you've already tried re-downloading the installer, here are some additional steps you can try:

1. Use a Different Browser and Internet Connection
Sometimes, downloads get corrupted due to browser or network issues. Try downloading the Gateway installer from Power BI Gateway official site using:
A different browser (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Firefox).
A different network, if possible (e.g., mobile hotspot).

2. Run as Administrator
Right-click the installer and choose "Run as Administrator". Some system permissions may interfere with accessing installer components.

3. Temporarily Disable Antivirus or Security Software
Antivirus software may block or quarantine parts of the installer. Temporarily disable your antivirus and try installing again.

4. Clear Temporary Files
Corrupted temp files can interfere with installations. Press Windows + R, type temp and delete the files. Then again run Windows + R, type %temp% and delete those as well.

5. Check Disk Space and RAM
Make sure you have enough disk space and available RAM for installation. A low resource environment can result in file read/write errors.

6. Try Installing in Safe Mode (with Networking)
Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and run the installer. This minimizes interference from background processes or services.

7. You can verify the file's integrity by checking the digital signature:

Right-click the downloaded .exe file > Properties > Digital Signatures tab.

Ensure the signature from Microsoft Corporation is valid.

8. Re-download the Installation File:

Ensure that the file is downloaded directly to your computer's hard drive and not onto an external drive or USB pendrive. This can sometimes resolve issues related to file corruption during download.

9. Check for Network Issues:

Ensure your internet connection is stable while downloading the installation file. A network error during download can corrupt the file .

10. Run Command Prompt as Administrator:

Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands:

msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver

This will re-register the Windows Installer service and may resolve the issue.

11. Clean Boot Troubleshooting:

Perform a clean boot to eliminate any third-party software conflicts:
Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and press ENTER. On the General tab, click Selective Startup. Under Selective Startup, clear the Load Startup items check box. Click the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and click Disable All. Click OK and restart your computer.

12. Check for RAM Issues:

Sometimes, this error can be related to faulty RAM. You can use tools like MemTest86 to check for RAM issues.

Please provide a more detailed explanation of what you are aiming to achieve. What have you tried and where are you stuck?  Personal or Enterprise gateway?  Host OS? Do you have admin rights?

Hi @lbendlin This happened when we were trying to update gateway and the installation kept on failling we are using windows 11 and IT installed this for us and hence admin access is not required.

Please use Windows Server operating system for gateway VMs.
