Power BI DesktopPower BI Desktop launch error

Hello colleagues.
I get this error after updating Power BI Desktop on Windows Server 2022 Standard.
I also installed Power BI Desktop on a freshly created Windows Server 2022 Standard from scratch, and the error still persists.
If I copy the Power BI Desktop file to another computer, it opens without any problems.

Another colleague had the same situation but downgraded to an older version from last year.
Can anyone recommend something? I have the impression that something is missing in my Windows.EROR.png

Hi Dumitru79,

Thank you for the follow up.

Based on my understanding, since the error recurs even after reinstalling WebView2 and Power BI Desktop, the problem appears to be environment related. It is likely associated with virtual server configurations or scheduled processes that affect the WebView2 runtime or the Analysis Services workspace used by Power BI Desktop. Power BI Desktop depends on the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime and a local Analysis Services instance (MSOLAP$AnalysisServicesWorkspace). On virtual servers, automated processes such as snapshots, system re-provisioning, or security policies can modify or remove WebView2 or corrupt the Analysis Services workspace files after a few days, causing visuals to fail to render.

Please follow the steps below, which may help resolve the issue:

  1. Confirm with your VM administrator that the server is not being reverted to an earlier snapshot or image after a few days. Ensure that the WebView2 and Power BI Desktop installations persist across reboots.
  2. Open Task Scheduler and disable or monitor the MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachine and any security or cleanup tasks that may periodically modify system files. Ensure that antivirus or endpoint protection software is not quarantining Power BI or WebView2 components.
  3. Add a user environment variable named:
    WEBVIEW2_ADDITIONAL_BROWSER_ARGUMENTS = --disable-features=RendererCodeIntegrity
    Restart Power BI Desktop afterwards.

Thankyou, @GeraldGEmerick, for your response.

Hi Dumitru79,

We appreciate your inquiry submitted through the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

Based on my understanding of the error and your environment (Windows Server 2022 Standard), the issue is most likely related to a missing Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, which Power BI Desktop requires for rendering visuals. Even if Power BI Desktop installs successfully, visuals may fail to load if WebView2 is not present or is outdated.

Please follow the steps below, which may help resolve the issue:

  1. Open Control Panel and, under Programs and Features, verify whether Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is installed.
  2. If it is missing or outdated, download the Evergreen WebView2 Runtime from Microsoft. Choose the Evergreen Bootstrapper (recommended) or the Fixed Version installer if your server has restricted internet access.
  3. Ensure you are using the latest version of Power BI Desktop (Standard) unless the Report Server edition is specifically required.
  4. Reboot the server after installing WebView2 and then relaunch Power BI Desktop.
  5. If you are using Power BI Report Server Desktop, ensure that the Desktop version matches your Report Server release. A version mismatch can cause visuals to fail.

Colleagues, I have done everything that was recommended here. Unfortunately, it didn’t have any effect. I even switched from Windows 11 PRO. After a few days, I encountered the same issue again. At first everything worked, but within 5 days the same errors appeared.
Could the problem be that I’m using a virtual server?

@Dumitru79 The first thing that I can think of would possibly be something related to WebView 2? What version of the Desktop is this? Is it the Report Server version and which month?
