Power BI Data Source Change - Keep Getting 'A DirectQuery" Connection Is Required
- 1 year ago
Hi IfaZ_1,
Thank you for the clarification. Based on your description, the associate's dashboard was built using a Power BI Service (published dataset) as its data source. Now, you want to redirect it to the original on-premise source.
Unfortunately, in Power BI, you cannot directly switch a report from a published Power BI Service dataset back to an on-premise data source because of differences in connection types and structures. Power BI treats Service datasets and on-premise sources differently, and direct swapping is restricted, especially when moving from Service datasets to Import or DirectQuery sources.
To achieve this, you would need to rebuild the associate’s dashboard by connecting it freshly to the on-premise source. You can speed up this process by reusing the existing report by copying visuals and pages into a new PBIX connected to the on-premise data source and rebuilding the measures and relationships if they were built inside the Service dataset.
I hope this helped! Feel free to ask any further questions. If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accept as Solution" and give us Kudos to assist others.
Thank you.
Hi IfaZ_1,
Thank you for using Microsoft Community Forum.
I understand that you're trying to change your Power BI data source from a Power BI Service dataset to an on-premise source in Import Mode but are encountering the 'DirectQuery connection is required' error.
To resolve this, first, check if your report is in DirectQuery or Import Mode by going to Transform Data --> Advanced Editor. If it's in Import Mode, changing the source directly may not be possible. Instead, try updating the connection in Power Query’s Advanced Editor or reconnect using Get Data -->Power BI Datasets.
If your goal is to seamlessly switch between sources, consider using parameters to define the data source path, making future changes easier. However, if Power BI does not allow a direct switch, you may need to rebuild the report using the new data source.
Please Accept as solution if this meets your needs and a Kudos would be appreciated.

Sahasra.
