Power BI - Data Gateway Installation Issue
- 2 months agoHello, thank you for following up. I was able to successfully install the Oracle and ODP.NET drivers, and I can now establish a connection and use the Data Gateway. Thank you for your support throughout this process!
1. "This may be due to the Power BI account being different from the one used to register the gateway" : That is true, I have configured this gateway in the VM server using "xyz" service account. As a user I am logging to app.powerbi.com and trying to access below gateway I created but I can't see . How to fix this issue.
2. In the below screen , Microsoft Fabric is showing not available after Data Gateway registration , would that be an issue?
3. How to check if my user Id has permissons to access registered data gateway
thank you.
Hi RPBI1
Thank you for clarifying. The behavior is now understandable.
The gateway was registered with the xyz service account, but you're using a different account to access Power BI Service. Gateways in Power BI aren't automatically visible to other users unless permissions are set.
Log in to Power BI Service with the xyz account or ask the gateway administrator to update your access. Go to Settings > Manage connections and gateways, select the gateway, and check that it's Online.
Add your current user account as a Gateway admin or Connection/Datasource user. If your account isn't listed, the gateway won't appear in your dataset settings.
For most on-premises gateway scenarios, make sure the datasource/connection under the gateway matches the dataset connection details exactly, including server name, database name, and authentication method.
Once permissions and datasource mapping are set, sign out and back into Power BI Service, then check the Gateway and cloud connections section in your dataset settings again.
Regarding “Microsoft Fabric – Not available” message in the gateway app isn't related to this issue and doesn't affect normal Power BI gateway use or dataset refresh. It concerns Fabric/Power Platform environment support and can be ignored here.

Thank you so much , steps you have provided worked , once I login to app.powerbi.com using xyz service account , I can see the data gateway I created, there I was able to add myself to the data gateway . And when I login to app.powerbi.com as me I am able to see the data gateway connection. So thank you so much.
I have noticed something with Region I picked while installing the gateway. Please see step 1 and 2.
step 1. when I selected "East US" in the region , Microsoft Fabric is not available and I was not seeing Data Gageway I created in app.powerbi.com
step 2. when I left default region which is "Australia Southeast" region , Microsoft Fabric is available and I am seeing Data Gageway I created in app.powerbi.com
my question: Is there permission issue in the region that was assigned to me which "East US" region ?

Hi RPBI1
Thanks for providing the screenshots and details. This issue is usually related to tenant and region alignment, not permissions for the “East US” region. The main difference is how Microsoft Fabric environments and gateway registrations connect to tenant regions.
When you chose East US, the gateway displayed “Microsoft Fabric – Not available” with the message “Can’t be used outside your default environment.” This indicates the gateway region doesn’t match your tenant’s default Power BI/Fabric region or assigned Fabric environment, so Fabric features aren’t enabled for that gateway registration.
Using the default region (Australia Southeast), the gateway matched your tenant environment, which made Microsoft Fabric available and showed the gateway in Power BI Service. Microsoft documentation states cross-region gateway scenarios aren’t supported, so the gateway region should match your tenant’s default Power BI/Fabric region for proper visibility and functionality.
For detailed guidance, please refer to Set the datacenter region for the on-premises data gateway | Microsoft Learn and community discussions such as Solved: Fabric Data Gateway in Non-Default Region - Microsoft Fabric CommunityI hope this clarifies things.
