Hi RPBI1
Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Fabric community forum.
When installing or registering the on-premises data gateway, you must sign in using a valid Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) work or school account.Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Fabric community forum.
A service principal (non-interactive identity) cannot be used for the initial gateway registration, as the setup requires interactive authentication. However, a service account (regular user account) can be used as long as it can sign in interactively.
Based on the screenshot, since the issue occurs during sign-in, it may not be related to the account type alone. The gateway sign-in experience uses the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime, so authentication issues can sometimes be related to cached credentials or local environment configuration.
You can try the following checks:
Ensure you are using a valid work/school (Entra ID) account (not a personal Microsoft account).
Try signing in using an InPrivate window or a different Windows user profile.
Clear cached credentials (Credential Manager / browser cache).
Ensure the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime is installed and up to date.
Check for network or proxy restrictions that may block authentication endpoints.
After the gateway is successfully installed, service principals can be used in supported Power BI/Fabric automation scenarios through Power BI Service or REST APIs.

Hi RPBI1
Thank you for the update. With the gateway now installed and showing as online, the current issue is that Power BI Service is not detecting a compatible gateway connection for your dataset.
This may be due to the Power BI account being different from the one used to register the gateway, the gateway not having a configured datasource or connection, a mismatch between the dataset connection details and the gateway datasource settings, or the user lacking permission to access the gateway or datasource.
Since the gateway is online locally, please check if it appears in Power BI Service under Settings > Manage connections and gateways, and make sure the current user has access. For most on-premises gateway setups, a datasource or connection should be added to the gateway that matches the dataset connection details, including the server name, database name, and authentication method.
If a different account owns or manages the dataset, please ensure that user has permission to use the gateway or datasource, such as being added as a datasource user or gateway admin.
Once these checks are complete, go back to the dataset settings to see if the gateway appears under the Gateway and cloud connections section.

1. "This may be due to the Power BI account being different from the one used to register the gateway" : That is true, I have configured this gateway in the VM server using "xyz" service account. As a user I am logging to app.powerbi.com and trying to access below gateway I created but I can't see . How to fix this issue.
2. In the below screen , Microsoft Fabric is showing not available after Data Gateway registration , would that be an issue?
3. How to check if my user Id has permissons to access registered data gateway
thank you.

Hello, I went with default region and registed my gateway, now I am trying to create new connection getting following error.
In Data Gateway VM server , I have installed Oracle client and able to connect to the database using SQLPlus and I was able to create Power BI dashboard using same credentials on the Data Gateway VM server. Since I was able to connect to the database in powerbi I didn't installed ODAC drivers. Should I install ODAC driver?
thank you

Hi RPBI1
Yes, you need to install the Oracle ODAC (Oracle Data Access Components) package on the gateway machine. Being able to connect through SQL*Plus or Power BI Desktop only confirms that a basic Oracle client and network connectivity are working. The on-premises data gateway additionally requires the Oracle provider components, including OraOLEDB.Oracle, to be properly installed and registered.
From the error message, it appears the required Oracle provider is either missing, not registered correctly, or incompatible with the current setup. Please install the 64-bit ODAC package and ensure it includes both Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET) and Oracle Provider for OLE DB (OraOLEDB.Oracle). Also verify that the Oracle client and ODAC versions are compatible, then restart the On-premises Data Gateway service and try creating the connection again.
