Hi,lbendlin ,thanks for your concern about this issue.Your answer is excellent!
And I would like to share some additional solutions below.

Hello,@Héctor1985.I am glad to help you.

According to your description, you want to achieve the following effect in the matrix: display data corresponding to both year and month granularity at the same time without disabling the matrix hierarchical field expansion feature.
Unfortunately, by default, it is not possible to display both year and month granularity data in Power BI matrices without expanding the hierarchy. This is because Power BI's hierarchy is designed to expand data layer by layer for better management and presentation of complex data sets.

Here are my suggestions that can help you achieve your desired results as much as possible.
Define a custom column that combines the year and month. For example, you can create a “YearMonth” column in the format “YYYY-MMMM”. Then use this new column in the matrix.
like this:

2. The Power BI default matrix is difficult to achieve your expected results, so I also recommend that you use other similar custom matrix visual, to see if there can meet your custom vsiual, or try to make two in addition to the X-axis limitations on the granularity of the different, and other all the same matrix. One is modified by the year and the other by the month to make it easier to compare.

Here is my test data:

I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.

Best Regards,

Carson Jian,

Is this in ReportServer or regular Power BI?  Did you disable the header icons? You need them if you want to expand/collaps column hierarchies.

This is for a regular report. Yes, I disabled the header icons. My task is to make sure that both the year and the month appear (as I indicate in the photo), without touching the expand and collapse arrows.

Not possible. And not user friendly. Enable the header icons.
