Performance Discrepancy Between Non-Prod and Prod Power BI Gateway Refreshes

Hello Microsoft Support,

We are experiencing a performance issue with Power BI dataset refreshes that appears to be related to our gateway configuration.

Issue Summary:

  • We have two Power BI gateways: Non-Prod and Prod, both located in the same region and configured with identical properties.
  • When refreshing the same Power BI report using the Non-Prod Gateway, the refresh completes quickly.
  • However, using the Prod Gateway, the refresh is significantly slower, despite no changes in the report, data source, or server configuration.

Request:

We would appreciate your assistance in identifying the root cause of this discrepancy. Specifically, we would like to understand if there are:

  • Any known issues or throttling affecting the Prod Gateway
  • Network latency or resource bottlenecks
  • Logs or diagnostics we can collect to assist in troubleshooting

Please let us know if you require additional information or logs from our side.

Thank you for your support.

Best regards,
Thalla, Shravan

Hi @shravan1314 ,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum. I appreciate the steps you've already taken to isolate the issue.

As @jaineshp mentioned, check the load and version on both gateways, review logs for issues, and use diagnostic tools to spot bottlenecks. Also, test network latency and confirm if Premium capacity limits could be affecting refresh performance.

To assist further, Microsoft provides guidance on monitoring and optimizing on-premises data gateway performance, which you can refer to here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-performance These resources can help you interpret the diagnostics and understand underlying issues.

As @lbendlin correctly mentioned, this forum is helpful for general support, but for a deeper investigation involving gateway logs or performance issues, it's better to contact Microsoft Support directly by raising a support ticket.

Hope this helps. Please reach out for further assistance.

Thank you.

Hi @shravan1314 ,

Here are a few steps you can try to pinpoint the root cause:

  1. Check Gateway Load – Confirm if the Prod gateway is handling more datasets or concurrent refreshes than Non-Prod.

  2. Review Event Logs – Export and review gateway logs during refresh to identify bottlenecks (CPU, memory, errors).

  3. Compare Data Source Latency – Even if source is same, verify if network or SQL response times differ for Prod.

  4. Update Gateway Version – Ensure both gateways are on the same and latest version.

  5. Run a Trace – Use Performance Monitor or Gateway Diagnostics Tool during refresh for deeper insight.

  6. Capacity & Throttling – Check if the workspace is tied to a Premium capacity and if it's being throttled during Prod refresh.

  7. Network Check – Run ping/traceroute from gateway machine to DB server to compare latency.

Hope this works!
