PBIX compatible does not upload or replace in latest Report Server PBI.

Hello, everyone!

We’re using the Power BI Report Server (RS), version 1.20.8926.40580 (May 2024), and I’m editing my BI report using the compatible desktop version indicated by this RS. The Power BI Desktop RS version is 2.129.2203.0 64-bit (May 2024).

The problem is that the RS doesn’t accept the edited PBIX for publishing (upload or replacement). I currently have an older PBIX version from April on the RS that I need to replace, but during this operation, the RS throws the error "Something went wrong. Please try again later." with the title "Couldn't replace the item."

I tried uploading again to an empty folder/directory in the RS, but this time it showed the error "This report cannot be uploaded. The report was created with a recent version of Power BI Desktop that is not yet supported by this server." with the title "Cannot upload this report."

I noticed that these types of issues have happened before with older versions of the Power BI Report Server.

Interestingly, the current RS accepts PBIX files that were edited in older versions of PBI Desktop RS.

Is anyone else experiencing the same situation? Could it be that Microsoft will address this issue in the next RS version expected in September?

Thanks in advance for your attention and help!
Best regards!
Paulo Correia.

    Hi, paulo_correia

Thank you very much for your reply. As you mentioned, you use a Power BI desktop that is compatible with the current version of Report Server.
You mentioned that your PBIX has gone through multiple updates and here I tested one case
When we open this PBIX file with a higher version of Power BI Desktop and save it, we will no longer be able to upload the PBIX file to Report Server.
This file below me was created in the January version of Desktop and I was able to upload it in the May version of Report Server:

When I open a January PBIX file with a higher version of Power BI desktop next to it, I get this warning like this:

Then when I upload it again, it won't be uploaded:

To solve this problem, we can reopen this PBIX file of yours in an earlier version of Power BI desktop RS version, and then click Save to re-upload it.

You mentioned that you're using the May version of Report Server, and you can download the January version of Power BI Desktop RS from the link below, open your PBIX file with it, and then upload it to Report Server.

Please note that please back up your PBIX file in advance and use the copy as a test.

Download Microsoft Power BI Report Server - January 2024 from Official Microsoft Download Center

  • Hello, Jianpeng Li!

    Excellent, my friend!

I followed your instructions, and it worked very well.

From now on, I’ll do the following: I won’t use the latest PBI Desktop RS version recommended by the updated Report Server. However, since it always accepts previous PBI Desktop RS versions, I’ll use the second-to-last version, so I’m not too far behind the latest release.

    God bless you abundantly!
    A big hug from Brazil!
Thank you so much for your help and all your attention!

    Hi, paulo_correia

If you are using Power BI desktop that does not correspond to the current version of Report Server to create a Power BI report and upload it to Report Server, you will usually get the error you mentioned:

You can create your report and upload it to Report Server from the following steps in the corresponding version of Power BI desktop:

      Hello, Jianpeng Li!

As I mentioned, the Desktop is compatible with the RS. I downloaded it from the link provided by the Report Server itself. That’s the issue. I noticed in the history of previous reports that this was once only resolved with a new version of the RS.

Do you understand? My development environment is compatible with the RS because I downloaded the Desktop from the RS link.

My specific situation is that this PBIX has been updated multiple times, but with this latest version of the RS and its corresponding PBI Desktop RS, I am unable to update or replace it.

Could someone please advise me on how to resolve this? Or will it only be fixed in the new version to be released in September?

Thank you all for your attention!
      Best regards!
