Our current architecture uses a Power BI Pro license to access reports that are hosted on MS Azure so that users can visualize application data. On Azure we have a web app that hosts the .pbix file for the report along with the SQL Server database. All of this works just great.
However, our customer wants to us to move out of the cloud to an on-premise server that does not require a monthly bill to Microsoft.
I understand that with SQL Server Enterprise Edition , we could host the reports on our server using Power BI Reports Server. But SQL Server Enterprise seems overkill for the size/complexity of this application (and quite pricey compared to Standard).
Is there another alternative that would work with SQL Server Standard edition? e.g., can you purchase Power BI Reports Server as an add-on to SQL Server standard?

The only other way to license Power BI Report Server (other than purchasing Enterprise Edition with Software Assurance) it to purchase Power BI Premium capacity. But in this case you are still paying monthly for cloud capacity, you just have the right to install a local instance with the same amount of cores as you've licensed in the cloud and publishers still require pro licenses. So typically you would only use PBIRS if you have regulatory or other concerns about putting data in the cloud, I don't think you would do this as a cost saving exercise.
