Help with Power BI Report Server Upgrade to May 2024 Version (Upgrade Option Missing in Wizard)

Hello,

I am seeking guidance on how to upgrade my Power BI Report Server to the latest May 2024 version. Currently, I am on the September 2023 version, and my license is under a Software Assurance (SA) contract for SQL Server Enterprise.

I have been updating Power BI Report Server for several years without any issues, but this time, when I start the installer, the "Upgrade" option does not appear in the installation wizard. I have reviewed the available documentation but cannot find a solution.

Specifically, I tried to look for the January 2024 version on the Microsoft download platform, but it is not available. I am assuming that it might be necessary to update to an intermediate version before May 2024 for the upgrade option to be enabled.

What I have tried:

  • Reviewed the Power BI Report Server documentation
  • Searched for similar issues in the community forums
  • Attempted to locate the January 2024 version for a possible intermediate update

Technical Details:

  • Current version: September 2023

  • Target version: May 2024
  • License: Software Assurance (SA) for SQL Server Enterprise

Questions:

  1. Is there a known issue or specific requirement for upgrading from the September 2023 version to the May 2024 version?
  2. Do I need to update to an intermediate version first, and if so, which version should I use?
  3. Are there any additional steps or considerations I should be aware of to perform this upgrade correctly?

I appreciate your support and any advice you can provide.

Hi, @jpatino-mcp

I just tried this status quo and when I finished installing the September 23 version and opened the May 24 installer and he showed the image below.

You may be able to check if you have a 23-year-old Report Server on your computer. It's weird.

It's also possible that you previously installed SQL Server Reporting Services because their installation interface is very similar.

You can check it.

Hello @v-yohua-msft
Thank you for your response. I have confirmed the following:

  1. Installation:

    • The installation is on the same server where I have Power BI Report Server September 2023 installed.
    • This is the only instance of Power BI Report Server running on this server.

  2. Verification with January Version:

    • I also tried running the January 2024 installer by @aduguid , but the "Upgrade" option is still not appearing.

Given these checks, the issue persists with both the January and May 2024 installers.

Could you please provide further guidance or additional steps that I might need to follow to enable the upgrade option in the installer? Are there any specific configurations or prerequisites that I might be missing for these newer versions?

Thank you for your assistance.

I'm actually upgrading 2 servers over the weekend to May 2024 version. I'll post screenshots of the install.

Here are screenshots from the upgrade from Jan 2024 to May 2024. It all worked with no issues on both servers.

I have just noticed an issue on direct query connections after the upgrade. I didn't catch it on the test instance. I only have a few like this. For the time being I've updated them to an import connections. The sources are just views, so I'm not sure why the error is saying Analysis Services.
