Exporting Data to Excel from Power BI Public Dashboard

Is it possible to export data directly to Excel from a Power BI Public Dashboard? If so, could you kindly guide me through the process? Alternatively, if direct export is not supported, are there any recommended workarounds to achieve this?

Based on the information provided and my understanding, it seems that the default settings for public Power BI reports generally restrict unauthorized or anonymous users from exporting data directly to Excel. This aligns with Power BI's emphasis on data governance and safeguarding sensitive information. However, it's important to note that Public Reports contain Public Data.

To enable external (anonymous) users to export public data from public dashboards, public organizations may need to adjust permissions settings accordingly. Please provide the steps or any workarounds.

If there are any additional insights or experiences regarding enabling data export for external users in public Power BI reports, I would greatly appreciate hearing about them. Again, let me emphasize that the data used in the dashboard is entirely public anyway.

Thank you.

Best Regards,

One of the limitations with publish to web is that you cannot export the data. Here are the details in terms of the limitations for the published to web feature.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Exporting data to Excel can be done directly from Power BI dashboards and report visuals under certain conditions. This functionality allows users to see the data being used to create a visual or export it for further analysis in Excel. For detailed steps on how to export data to Excel, please refer to the official documentation here: Export data from a Power BI visualization.

Hello @Anonymous,

Thank you for your response.

I am interested in whether unauthorized users can export summarized data to Excel from a public Power BI report directly. Could you please clarify if this feature is available without special permissions?

To clarify, I am interested in understanding if it's feasible for unauthorized users to export data directly to Excel from a public Power BI report (embedded into the website) without requiring special permissions. This scenario is important for ensuring accessibility and usability for a wider audience without the need for explicit access rights.

P.S. This feature is available for other leading BI platforms like Tableau, and it's crucial, especially for Public Organizations, that share public dashboards and allow users to download filtered summarized data.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best Regards,

Hi @Anonymous ,

For public Power BI reports or dashboards (such as those embedded on a website), the ability for unauthorized or anonymous users to export data directly to Excel is not typically enabled by default. This is because Power BI places a strong emphasis on data governance and the protection of sensitive information.

Regarding your specific interest in whether unauthorized users can export summarized data without special permissions, the default behavior in Power BI is to restrict such actions to protect data privacy and integrity. Export permissions are typically granted explicitly to authorized users.
