Data Source in Power BI Report Server

Do I understand correctly that the data sources created in the "Power BI Report Server" are available only in the "Report Builder"?

Thank you

Hi, @Paul77

You're referring to a shared data source hosted in the Power BI Report Server web portal:

This data source, we can use it in Report builder:

Or you can use another SSDT tool to connect to this shared data source.

Hello @Paul77

No, data sources in Power BI Report Server are not exclusive to Report Builder.
• Paginated reports (`.rdl`) can use shared data sources across reports via Report Builder.
• Power BI reports (`.pbix`) rely on embedded data sources but can reuse published datasets as a workaround

Data sources in Power BI Report Server operate differently depending on the report type and tool used.

Created and managed within Power BI Desktop (optimized for Report Server). These data sources are embedded directly into the `.pbix` file and must support scheduled refresh

Created in Power BI Report Builder or SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). These can be configured as shared data sources on the Report Server, allowing reuse across multiple paginated reports
