Cannot upload PBIX with embedded data to Report Server

Hi,

I installed the October release of PBIRS and attempted to save a report on the Report server using embedded data but I get the following error: "There was an error uploading your .pbix file. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

I did not have SSRS installed prior to this on this server and I am using SQL 2017 if that matters.

Would be glad if anyone can help.

Thanks,

MB

  • The issue was eventually resolved by adding the "NT SERVICE\PowerBIReportServer" account. I am nnot sure where this was mentioned in the instructions - if someone can point it would be useful. Thanks.

  • Hello

We had the same problem. Our current Power BI Report Server is Version 1.1.6514.9163 (October 2017).

After we upgrade our Power BI Desktop to Version: 2.52.4921.461 64-bit (November 2017) then this error occurs when uploading the pbix file.

We tried re-install everythng from scratch including Windows Server and SQL Server but could not fix the problem

We ended up wasting a day and solve the problem by reverting Power BI desktop back to an older version

From our test, the last known working version of Power BI Desktop is Version: 2.51.4885.543 64-bit (October 2017)

It seemed the 2.51 to 2.52 upgrade of Power BI Desktop has something upsetting the Power BI Report Server, reason unknown.

Thanks and hope it could help someone like us.

    Kevin

We do not have SSRS 2017 installed.

mgmeyer Do you know what else could be the problem?

        Couple more questions:

        1. Do you have any other versions of SSRS installed or just PBIRS? (Just want to rule out the URL possibility)

        2. Can you check the RSPortalXXX and RSPowerBIXXX logs in the setups LogFiles folder and let me know if you see any exceptions?

        Thanks!

  • I had the same issue with the Nov 2017 release of Desktop (2.52.4921.461), and using the Nov 2017 release of the Power BI Server.

Did not have issues with the Oct 2017 release of Desktop paired with Nov 2017 Server so I downloaded the Oct release again (from here: https://zenatti.net/2017/07/04/power-bi-previous-versions/), re-saved my pbix files and then uploaded successfully.

Appears to be an issue with the Nov Desktop release. Sorry, but I don't time to add any more info.

I am using the October Power BI Desktop - for Report server and still struggling to upload the dashboards with embedded data onto the server.

Those who are trying this with the November Power BI Desktop which was released a few days back, please note you cannot use that, as that is not the software for the Report server ... the Report server Power BI Desktop is separate application (and the latest release is the October version).

Even i have the same issue while uploading PBIX file onto Report server and i had to remove the Report server PBI database and Report server PBI Temp database from Database Engine and re-configure PBI report server from scratch, then i'm able to uplaod the PBIX files without any issue, but the problem is i had to load all the PBIX files again and configure again which is bit time taking process.
