Cannot share content with external user (data connection : OData & SQL Server)

Hello dear community,

I would like to share a power bi report with an external user (outside our domain) but it doesnt work:; the data source is from our SQL server (GP) and dynamics CRM.

  1. I have followed the required steps to share content with external users : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-admin-azure-ad-b2b
  2. enabled the Share content with external users feature in the Power BI admin portal
  3. I also sent the invite using the Azure portal or PowerShell.

4. I even added them to our report through the share UI

5. I added the external user in my workspace (even though external users cannot access others worspace)

6. The user has an pro license.

Please help!

Thanks

Sylpel

  • Hi, which connection do you have in the Report: - Direct Query -Import ? If you have direct query the external user can't see anything because of the security of the DB. In Import mode it should work. Best, Kathrin

Ok, have you give the permission also direct on the report? Maybe that is the problem.

    Best, Kathrin

  • Hi Katrin,

Thanks for your help. I finally succeeded! I had to create an app and allow the user to connect to the underlying data.

    Thank you!

Thank you Kathrin for you reply,

Unfortunately I am in Import mode . Therefore my problem is elsewhere.
