August release: Unable to load the data model

I have downloaded the August release (14.0.600.379) and created a simple report against a sql database (with Power BI Desktop 2.49.4831.801), deployment of the report to the report server was successful. However when I try to load the report in the browser I get the error message:

The Analysis Server instance has experienced an error and is not available. Please contact your system administrator.

I'm a bit puzzled since I don't have a connection to SSAS data in the report at all.
1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

I found now the problem, seems to be a common issue within our company with SSRS, reason is that some local policies are not set for the service account:

  • Adjust Memory quotas for process
  • Increase a process working set
  • Lock pages in Memory

So created a domain service account, set the GPO for this service account that give the necessary privileges. Not sure if the SSRS installer could fix that, or at least during installation give a warning if the necessary privileges are missing.

Are you using direct query with SQL Server database? I have created report with excel and Teradata import without any problem.

Nope, with imported data, the Power BI Report Server is running on Window 6.3.9600 (Win2012 R2) with 8 GB RAM

Power BI uses embedded Analysis Services data models internally to host your data, unless you are pointing to a live analysis services server. Since you mention you created your report against a SQL DB your likely using the embedded model which is a new feature in teh August preview. Can you check the RSPowerBIXXX.log and RSHostingServiceXXX.log in the following folder and let me know is you see any errors:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power BI Report Server\PBIRS\LogFiles

Thanks!

Unable to load a report

connection is to SQL DB using Direct Query

Saves to report server, however doesn't load

Based on this information I did look up Local Security Policy - Increase a process working set:
- Administrators
- LOCAL SERVICE

- Window Manager\Window Manager Group

however the button to add User or Group is greyed out. PBIRS runs under NT SERVICE\PowerBIReportServer
