The line chart allows you to select dates, highlights the related area, and computes the percentage change from the initial value to the final value.
Dataset:
I downloaded the dataset for SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust from Jan 1, 2015 to Nov 14, 2025. For the purpose of this visual, I normalized all the values to the value on Jan 1, 2015 using DAX.
Design:
- Used the date column from 'Prices' table to create a disconnected 'DatesTable'. The disconnected table is required for creating single values on the chart that would determine the highlighted area.
- I placed four measures: complete line, two markers for the start and end of the highlighted area, and highlighted area on the line chart.
- The start, end and highlighted area Measures are controlled by the Date Filter which is based on 'DatesTable'.
- With minimal color usage, I used conditional formatting to show increase or decrease between start and end value. Also, I added some context like 'Annual Return'.
- Instead of creating a separate KPI card, I used the title of the line chart to show the KPI number.
- For the data labels, I kept the start value in default black color whereas the final value has green or red color based on conditional formatting.
