I do enough financials and RAG status reporting in my day job, so when I read the Spotlight brief I thought: why not do something a little nostalgic for fellow 90s kids—and test my design skills outside of corporate greyish-blue?
First step was grabbing data. Turns out there’s a PokéAPI and some handy GitHub repos, and the Power Query engineering landed somewhere between “cobbled together” and “almost tidy,” considering the clock (and my day job).
The new card visual got me most of the way, but I wanted movement. Animation’s everywhere in modern web design, so I jumped into my favorite territory: DAX SVGs. From there, I had full control to make the cards behave exactly how I wanted—button slicer for interactive states, plus using it to arrange a grid (you can’t quite pull that off in the new image visual). Shout‑out to Injae Park for dropping the button slicer tip a while back; it’s still doing heavy lifting for me.
While we’re handing out credit: Kerry Kolosko for her wicked site sharing SVG secrets that dragged me into this rabbit hole in the first place, and Daniel Marsh-Patrick for the great chat about visualizations and his journey to creating the Deneb visual at the recent Difinity conference in Auckland.
Hope everyone likes the end result—if you want to chat or share DAX, find me on LinkedIn.
Certainly a labor of love, well done and much respect!
It most certainly is! I wish I had more time to polish and refine but think this works as a proof of concept
Love that you chose to do something a bit different as the topic 😉
Thanks Nardia! I got a little carried away from the brief as I fell down this rabbithole, but I think people should still enjoy it!
Great animation and visualization.
thanks Jmar, glad you enjoyed it
This is amazing! I love the animation, it's a great touch! Very well done
Thanks, it's been something I've wanted to try for a while (and took me most of the week to get it right!).
