Excited to share my submission for Miniviz May - Week 4!
This week’s prompt asked us to use a map to show a pattern or difference across locations, keeping it simple with one measure or category. To do this, I mapped one of the biggest economic stories of our lifetime: the shift in global trade dominance.
The Data Story:
- Using a simple binary category, the maps track whether a country's larger bilateral goods trading partner was the USA (Blue) or China (Red).
- 2000: The U.S. clearly dominated global trade across most continents.
- 2025: A massive pattern shift occurs. Driven by the commodities boom, major economies across the Global South,including Argentina, Brazil, Angola, and South Africa, entirely flipped their primary trade partner from the U.S. to China
- Meanwhile, the U.S. retained its immediate economic sphere, remaining the top partner for North American neighbors like Canada and Mexico
