MIniviz May Week3 Challenge
Overview
This entry visualizes a full 168-hour week across 9 life areas using a hierarchical treemap. Each top-level tile represents a major category (Sleep, Work, Social & Family, etc.), sized proportionally to total hours spent. Nested within each tile are sub-categories, further broken down to reveal how time is actually distributed at the activity level - three layers of granularity in a single glance.
The What-If Interaction
The standout feature is the "What If" filter bar along the bottom, which lists all 9 life area categories as pill buttons. Selecting one (or several) removes that category from the base map entirely and redistributes the remaining 168 hours proportionally across the surviving tiles. This lets viewers instantly explore questions like:
- What does my week look like if I reclaimed Sleep time for something else?
- How large does Work loom when Social & Family is excluded?
- How much of my waking, non-work time goes to Entertainment vs. Health?
Rather than adding a separate chart or filter panel, the What-If mode transforms the treemap itself — the tiles dynamically resize, making the redistribution viscerally tangible in a way a table or bar chart never could. The interaction is reversible: deselecting a category restores it, so the viewer can toggle comparisons fluidly.
