This interactive Power BI report is based on data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, version 2025-2.
It visualizes how the number of animal species classified as Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable has changed between 2000 and 2025.
The dataset covers five major animal groups (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes) and represents global species assessments conducted by IUCN.
Users can explore the trends over time through the timeline play axis, which animates yearly changes in species counts.
Hovering over any animal category displays a tooltip with a line chart, showing the historical evolution of that category across all three conservation statuses, providing additional temporal context.
Sure, I downloaded it and I'm learning how you did it, but I want to understand how you generated the idea for this dashboard or its view.
I wanted to create a dashboard to show endangered species. The source was a PDF with three tables, each covering a different category (linked in the first post).
In Power Query I imported the tables, reformatted them into a consistent structure, added a category column, and appended them into one table.
To enable time-based exploration, I linked the dataset to a date table, which drives the time play axis.
The main visual is a stacked bar chart, with categories as the legend and species on the y‑axis, making comparisons across groups straightforward.
For tooltips, I built a separate tooltip page with a line chart, so hovering reveals historical trends without cluttering the main view.
The canvas background was generated with Copilot Designer, and I selected a colour palette that complements it for clarity and aesthetics.
I also added a smart narrative at the bottom. It calculates yearly measures, updates dynamically with the play axis, and provides a textual summary of the trends. The measures can be seen in the file.
I hope this helps? 😊

I'm really happy to hear that you liked my design 🌻
Stunning visual! 🌿📊
The design is incredibly clean and the color layering makes each conservation status easy to follow. The vintage paper texture also gives it a very documentary-style feel — perfect for such a serious topic.
And honestly, the numbers are shocking. Seeing the scale of endangered species laid out this clearly really drives home how urgent the situation is. This visualization makes the data hit much harder than a table ever could.
Excellent work — both visually and in raising awareness! 🙌
Thank you very much for your feedback 🌷
