Update data from power bi dataset in Excel - Different domains

Hi

 

We have a couple of excel workbooks used by the financial department where they get data from a power bi dataset. We are split into 2 companies, and 2 domains (@aaa and bbb) and some users who are in the domain where the dataset is not located needs to update the excel workbooks. We have not been able to get this to work even if their users have been given admin-rights to the workplace and we have turned on the settings as shown here: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-ie/blog/introducing-cross-tenant-power-bi-dataset-sharing/

 

Is there anything we can do so users in bbb can update with data located in aaa? Or do we have to give them users in both domains (that creates problems for us at its own)

    Hi Heinet 

     

    Maybe try adding them guests to the tenant where the datasets are stored. They can be invited as guests by the Azure Admin. After this has been completed, share the dataset withem per email and they will be asked to accept the invite. Then they can see the dataset.

     

    In the Power BI Admin portal, this may need to be activated

    This is activated and I tried to share it right now by mail, but getting the error "Sorry, we can't find the specified dataset

    The object may have been deleted, or you lack access to see it"

    (Translated by me, so the text might differ from the english error)

     

    when accessing the link with the user I shared it to

      What is your status? Do you have normal access (meaning you're not a guest) to both Tenants or are you a guest in one of them?

       

      If you are a guest, then someone needs to invite from within Azure AD as a guest.

       

      When they have done this, either someone shares the dataset with you, there will be a "ext" within your email when they are typing. Something like this

      test_test.com#EXT#@myyourcompany.onmicrosoft.com

      Follow that link after you receive it and follow the instructions. The same would need to be done for any other user

        Hi again JoeBarry

         

        I have both a guest account (like you shown in the spoiler tag) and an admin account in the tenant. So I testing with my guest account. I still get the same error when trying to get the data from the dataset with the guest account, no matter which type of access I have set. Also tested with a colleague now, same effect.

        He can see the report and dataset while logged into powerbi with the user in the other tenant, but can't access the dataset from excel
