Unable to Create Date Hierarchy After Splitting and Recombining Date Components in Power BI

Hi everyone,

I’m working in Power BI and trying to create a date hierarchy from a datetime column. I attempted the following steps:

  1. Split the original datetime column into separate Day, Month, and Year columns (all of them are in Whole Number format).

  2. Used the #date([Year], [Month], [Day]) formula in a custom column to reconstruct a date field. I set its data type as Date.

  3. In the Dataflow preview, the column correctly shows only the date (e.g., 12/17/2010). However, once the data is loaded into the Power BI report side, the same column displays the time part as well (e.g., 12/17/2010 12:00:00 AM), even though the datatype was set to date.

  4. When I right-click on the column, I do not get the "Create hierarchy" option.

I’m not sure why this is happening—am I missing a setting or step?

Any suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!image (31).pngimage (32).pngimage (33).pngimage (34).png

What are you planning to use the heirarchy for?  It is not generally required in any of the visuals. Adding the individual columns in the right order is faster.

once the data is loaded into the Power BI report side, the same column displays the time part as well (e.g., 12/17/2010 12:00:00 AM), even though the datatype was set to date.

A semantic model only has datetime column type.  "Date"  is only a formatting choice.
