Unable to Connect to SQL Server
Hi caracarn,
In your scenario, it seems the error occurred when you connected to the SQL Server from desktop, right? Were the Power BI desktop and SSMS installed on the same computer?
Please try to update the desktop to the newest version. Also enable the trace log files in Power BI desktop to see the detail error message.

I ended up closing PowerBI just because I had no time to keep looking. When I opened it three hours later and tried to reconnect just connected. No idea why I was getting the error.

I'm sorry the issue bother you.
It seems that the issue happened intermittently. Please use SQL Profile to trace the connection to the SQL Server, see if any useful information can be found. I guess the issue should be machine specific. You can try to install desktop in another computer to see if the same issue occurs. If possible please share detail steps with us to reproduce the issue?

Qiuyun YuI have not been able to reproduce the issue. The detiled steps of what I did was:
- Install PowerBI
- Open PowerBI
- Select Get Data
- Select SQL Server Database
- Enter Database Server name and Import Data and use Windows Authentication
- Error occured
That was it. Nothing fancy. As I said, after trying to connect to different servers and databases the error was occuring for at least 30 minutes. I then had to work on other tasks. Came back to it in the afternoon and upon going in to PowerBI repeated the above steps starting at 3 and connnected immediately. I had done the traces, but have no idea how to read them, so they were useless to me.
