Reference query got refresh when base excel file changed

I Load the Excel file into power query editor, and then I create a reference query of the main excel query. Now if Excel file got updated then Is it reference file refresh or not.

Yes, that query will evaluate. It will say "what's the source? I'm referencing this other query. What's this other query? Let me make sure it's up to date. Where's that Excel source. Let me update the table with this new info.

Reference queries still reference queries. They are great for making different queries that all go through the same steps up to a certain point. There is nothing that stops a Table query from evaluating; even Table.Buffer only applies to the query that you add it to, so buffering the Reference table nor the Source table will stop the evaluation.

Now I'm sure that my there are some limited circumstances that tables and list do not get evaluated, like from a different sexism document, but we should always assume. That all of the queries are going to be evaluated.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Yes, it will refresh. Taking a reference of a query just recreates the original query at its final query step so, if the original query gets refreshed and the table at the last step changes, then so does the reference query.

What I think you want to do is:

DUPLICATE your original query, then right-click your new query that you don't want to change and UNCHECK 'Include in report refresh'. This will stop it requesting new data when you refresh.
