Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) in Power Query Gone in September 2024 Update?

Up to the most recent update, the Power Query editor in Power BI has had a quick access toolbar (QAT) which I had multiple actions pinned to, including advanced editor view and count rows (actions which I do dozens of times I'm in Power BI). All I needed to do for these actions was use keyboard shortcut alt + 2 or alt + 3. Now though with the September 2024 update (the one that brought dark mode to Power BI) it appears that the QAT is gone and I can't do anything to get those back. Is this true? If so, shame on Microsoft for taking away such a useful feature. I was hoping Power BI itself would get a QAT so I could speed up my workflow even more, not loose a core functionality that already existed.

Hi @GregoryB

It appears that the Quick Access Toolbar in the Power Query Editor is only present when the Theme is set to Default, but not when set to Dark, Light, or Use system setting 😞

The good news is that your previous QAT settings should be restored if you switch back to Default.

I don't see why this should be the case, and I'll be submitting some feedback on this!

Dark theme is very nice, but really annoying that the QAT is gone 😡
How can we get this back Microsoft?

I set it back to the default theme and it did not correct the issue.

@AbrahamAlan

Just confirming, did you select "Legacy"? I see that the naming has changed since my earlier post.

In my installation (2.138.1203.0 64-bit (November 2024)), only "Legacy" enables the QAT.

Any of "Dark", "Light" or "System default" disable the QAT.

Oh, you're right! It was on "System default". I just swithced to "Legacy" and bingo- the QAT is back. Awesome, thank you!

Only that Legacy is a pain to the eyes when you come from dark mode.

Guess I must get used to Alt-W-Q (opens advanced editor)

Interesting, good to know. I talked to Microsoft about the lack of a QAT bar in the September version and they informed me that they expect to have it fixed in the October version, so should be fixed soon.

I completely agree. I was really disappointed to see that Power Query’s Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) disappeared in Power BI Desktop’s September release when selecting any of the new color themes. It's such a useful feature for me as well.

I just installed the October release, but unfortunately, the QAT still isn’t back. The only theme that continues to support it is now called 'Legacy'.

Also, I’ve noticed that Power Query’s 'File' menu exhibits similar behavior to the QAT.

I really hope the QAT returns. It would be unfortunate if it was permanently removed just 'to align with the new design principles and provide a cleaner interface'.

Probably (hopefully?) they just didn't get the fix implemented before the October release was ready to ship. I guess we'll just have to watch the November release closely.
