Power Query Crashes Excel on refresh or loading query to sheet

Not sure this is the right forum but was referred here from the 365 / Excel Forum.

Issue:

Excel crashes immediately after:

  • Trying to refresh existing queries loaded on a sheet

  • Trying to load a query to a new sheet

  • Loading Query as connection only or refreshing query from the PowerQuery editor without loading causes no issues

Crash Details:

  • No errors are displayed right before or after crash.
  • After crash, Excel recovery opens .xlsb file.
  • Data size, source connection type, or query complexity does not make a difference.
  • In the Recovered .xlsb file in the Queries & Connections panel a warning message is displayed for all queries: "All External Data Connections have been disabled".

Other relevant details:

  • Issue started happening only after updating to Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2407 Build 16.0.17730.20000) 32-bit.
  • All queries that used to work prior to update, now cause excel to crash upon refresh or when trying to load query to sheet.
  • Tested same queries on 2 different machines and no issues.
  • Queries produced no isses on machines running earlier versions/builds (ex. tested on Version 2403 Build 17425.20236)

Troubleshoot steps tried:

In last 2 days have tried all of the following to no avail:

  • New Connections

  • Other User

  • New Office Install

  • Disabling all Addins

  • Excel Safemode

  • Clean boot

  • O365 Quick Repair

  • O365 Online Repair

  • Applied all Microsoft PC updates.

Not sure what next steps to follow or if reverting to my previous Office/Excel version is an option.

Versions/Build used:

  • Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2407 Build 16.0.17730.20000) 32-bit

  • Windows 10 Home version 22H2; OS Build 19045.4412

  • Laptop i5 8GB 64-bit

Many blessings & thank you for any guidance anyone can provide.

Hi @MarcusValerius ,

Have you tried the methods offered by @lbendlin ? Did it work?

Use 64 bit Office

Don't use xlsb - use xlsx.

I'm experiencing the same thing as @MarcusValerius on Version 2405 64-bit with a .xlsx file

UPDATE: I just downloaded and installed Version 2407 64-bit from my Microsoft Account site, and it worked (Power Query Refresh) without crashing.
