On Premise Gateway - Is Express Route Required

Is Express Route required when setting up on on premise gateway?

Also - for pro licensing, do you have to pay extra for the gateway, or is it included?

Azure ExpressRoute provides a very fast, private connection between your data center and Azure. Think of it as a VPN between your network and Azure. Some places require this added security and performance.
