Need assistance with MTD calculation

I have been through previous requests, but cannot find an answer I can get to work correctly in those responses. 

I am trying to count the number of events until today, but this is not taking the current date into consideration

Would appreciate any guidance

MTD Start =

    CALCULATE(

        COUNT('events-export'[Invitee Email]),

           DATESMTD('events-export'[Start Date].[Date]), DateTable[Date])

You may also consider using only the date functions:

MTD Start = 
CALCULATE (
    COUNT ( 'events-export'[Invitee Email] ),
    FILTER (
        'DateTable',
        'DateTable'[Year] = YEAR ( TODAY () )
            && 'DateTable'[Month] = MONTH ( TODAY () )
            && DAY ( 'DateTable'[Date] ) <= DAY ( TODAY () )
    )
)
