Make On-premises Cluster Gateway without Power BI

I am currently using a personal gateway.

Does the PC that will be on all the time need to have Power BI installed or anything like a separate Pro License to be used as the main gateway? Or do I just need to install the gateway on that one, and then the PCs that will be used will have BI installed on them?

And is a Pro license enough for all this?

It seems that you may have a little confused about data gateway, power bi license, power bi desktop and power bi service. Let me explain in detail.

Firstly, we always install or run the data gateway on a machine that can be left running all the time. Please refer to this document for more details.

In addition, the gateway intallation is not related to your power bi license, so you could install it even if you have free license.

Normally, we will configure the gateway when we need refresh the dataset in Power BI Service, so I think there is no direct relationship for power bi desktop and data gateway. You should install the data gateway based on your requirement.

So am I correct that all the gateways are not needing a BI License at all - just so long as they can connect to all data sources used?

Do I then go to Power BI online, and select the main gateway to be used, and all other personal ones just need to install and it will automatically allow them to select the main gateway to connect to?

I'm afraid that you need a Power BI free license when you sign in the Gateway. As the gateway is associated with your Power BI account, and you manage gateways from within the Power BI service. 

Then you could see your gateway under Manage gateways in Power BI Service. 

I’m a little confused about your second question, do you want to share your gateway?
