Import dataverse data using service principal

Hello community,

we want to import data from Dataverse to Power BI via a service principal. Preferably we want to use the Tabular Data Stream interface.

The official connector for querying data via TDS ("Dataverse") does not support authentication via a service principal. In general, there is no connector that supports authentication with a service principal, right?

I think we need to create a custom connector using Power Query SDK. Is that correct? Is it possible to authenticate to the Tabular Data Stream interface using a service principle or do we need to use a different interface? I could not find any helpful documentation.

So far, we are only using the Power BI Pro features. Does this affect the capabilities in this case? Is there anything to consider if we are going to use Fabric in the future?

Hi @ReneSchlegel ,

You are right, the official connector for querying data via TDS ("Dataverse") does not support authentication via service principals. In order to achieve this, you can create a custom connector using the Power Query SDK. However, the documentation does not provide information on whether you can authenticate to the Tabular Data Stream interface using a service principal, or whether you need a different interface.

You can continue to use your PBI Pro license if you don't need some advanced features.

Microsoft Fabric licenses

For now using a custom connector would work. After the summer we want to start using Fabric. With Fabric (or more precise Power Query Online) we are not able to use a custom connector, right? What is the recommanded way to get data from Dataverse to Fabric?
