Excel file refreshes fine in desktop Excel, but the service refresh corrupts

I have a relatively simple Power Pivot table I've added to the Power BI service via Sharepoint.

When I open it in Excel 2016 and refresh on my desktop, it works fine.

When the service refreshes it though It always returns once you try to interact with it - click on a slicer or filter for example - and both the service, Excel Online, and Excel 2016 give this error:

the pivottable report is invalid try refreshing the data

Opening it up in Excel 2016 and refreshing fixes it, but the error comes back again on the next scheduled refresh from the service.

Any ideas?

@edhans,

It seems that issue is related to the data source and report in your Excel. Do you click on a slicer or filter in PowerPivot table or in Power BI report?

Also please check if your sceanrio is similar as described in the blog and thread below.

Thanks. Let me review those articles and see if they help. The first one at a glance seems to not be the same. This works 100% of the time in Excel. It only goes south after I've added it to the PBI service via Sharepoint and let the service refresh through the gateway. 100% of the time opening it in Excel and refreshing fixes teh issue, and 100% of the time the next scheduled refresh corrupts it.

But I'll look into that article and the technet post in more detail.
