Start by updating to the latest version of PBI Desktop would be my first suggestion.

Check the settings for the feature would be my next.

    Thanks for the suggestions.  I did the update to the current version and checked the Preview settings, but still getting the same error.

      Can you connect to that dataset from a new PBIX?

        yes, and I can create a new visualizion from it. The error pops when I try to add a new data source for additional data.
