Enterprise Data Gateway Basics for a Dummy

I have to admit I am at the end of my rope with this data gateway thing. i must not be smart enough. i have read and re-read the documentation. the posts on this site and others. still not grasping the concept.

the personal data gateway was very easy. but i am failing horribly at the enterprise.

a member of the server team installed the data gateway. i watched them do it. but i am still lost as to how to connect to it. i know the name of the gateway, what server it is on, but fail to find the UI to configure it in the Power BI Service as all the documentation directs me to do.

i go to manage gateways and it says you have to install one.

is the instllation of a data gateway subject to the users account who installed it?

i am assuming that since this is an "Enterprise Data Gateway" that by design you would install one for the Enterprise so that all Power BI Pro users can utilize it.

it sure is easy to install. but heck if i can figure out how to actually use it.

    Hi Anonymous,

In your scenario, please ask the user who has installed and registered on-premises gateway to add you as an administrator to this gateway. The user can go to “Manage Gateways” in his Power BI Service, then clicks on the registered gateway, adds your email address under Administrators tab in the following screenshot.

After performing the above steps, you will be able to find the gateway when going to “Manage Gateways” in your Power BI Service, and you will be able to add data sources under the gateway.

    Thanks,
    Lydia Zhang
