I'm also Australian and my guess is that your Date values are stored in a DATETIME format which is being converted to a different Timezone. If you are only considering the Date portion of the value, you would have a small window where times change from 1 date to another. At the end of the month (and end of the year) that window will cause the dates to be in a different period entirely.
Have a look at the data you are importing first, and see whether you need to apply a timezone conversion. I'd be guessing it would be UTC to something near +10
