Clean up personal Gateway
Hello,
i tried the personal Gateway for power bi and the first time i tried it it worked perfectly.
Now i wanted to install on the real pc i needed a connection to but it doesnt show up in gateways connection.
Installation worked expect it only give me the option to install with only old configuration.
My first instinct is now to get back to a clean state, but i cannt find where i need to delete the old configuration.
I deinstalled everything but it keeps the data.
My final goal is to estably again a connection and that the new personal gateway is showing up in Power bi.
Thanks for the help and happy christmas
Hi Flocke_93
To fix the Personal Gateway issue:
- Uninstall the Gateway: Remove it via Control Panel.
- Delete Residual Files:Delete C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\On-premises Data Gateway.
- Stop and delete any remaining gateway services (services.msc > stop service > sc delete <ServiceName>).
- Remove Old Config from Power BI Service:Go to Settings > Manage Gateways in Power BI Service.
- Delete the old gateway entry.
- Reinstall the Gateway:Download and install the latest version.
- Set it up as a new configuration.
- Test Connection: Check if it appears under Manage Gateways in Power BI Service.
This ensures a fresh setup without old configurations.

There are two parts to this
1. physical machine /VM : this is where you install or uninstall the gateway software
2. logical setup : This is in the Power BI cloud, and where you can deregister a logical gateway setup https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/gateways
Both items operate largely independently.

Thanks for the Answer, regarding your point.
1. physical machine /VM : this is where you install or uninstall the gateway software
I did mutliple installs and uninstalls, without success. Still not showing on the power bi cloud
2. logical setup : This is in the Power BI cloud, and where you can deregister a logical gateway
here it not even selectable or in any form configureable
The other problem is with every new install it always pop up the question if i want to load the old configuration without a option to select a complete fresh install.
