Can't connect to SQL Server via servername\instance

Hi, I'm trying to connect to a SQL server via get data SQL server: servername\instance

However when I use: servername\instance I get the following Error:

Message=A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

When I use IPadress\instance it works. When I use servername.domain.nl\instance it also works. The strange thing is that servername\instance does work on one of my computers (one I have been using 5 years already with Power BI), but it doesn't work on my other computers (I tried 3).

I have tried several things already:

I have added ports udp 1434 and tcp 1434 as exceptions to my firewall. I have even tried to connect while disabling my firewall completely. The firewall can't be the issue. Also the server als can't be the issue, since it works on my one computer. All computers have Windows 10 and the latest version of Power BI installed. It seems my other computers aren't able to convert servername\adress to the specific adress of the server.

If this problem isn't resolved my two options are:

1. Only use the one computer that does work to maintain the reports (basically not an option)

2. Convert the datasources from the published reports to servername.domain.nl\instance and change the gateways (also not really an option, since I have allready published dozens of reports this way. It will take me several days)

Does anyone have any suggestions?

@Sebas2905,

Are you able to ping the target Server using server name?  Does the ping using the server name return back the same IP address as the ping to the FQDN?

In addition, are you able to use "Servername\instancename" in SSMS? Also check if there is a SQL Alias in the machine's SQL Client configuration for the remote server name.

Regards,
Lydia
