Add VSTS connection - takes long time, then dataset disappears

Adding a Visual Studio Team Services connection to Power BI web - appears to work...

Creates a Dashboard, Report and Dataset called "Visual Studio Team Services"

These stay greyed out for a long time - but eventually the Report and Dataset disappear as if deleted, leaving only the Dashboard which doesn't do anything when clicked.

This all used to work - but no longer does.

How do I correctly connect to our VSTS service?

Hi @stuartbean,

I got the internal information that the only connector that is expected to slow down in the Power BI.com connector for VSTS (Content Pack). The Content Pack is being deprecated since it was based on the VSTS REST API’s which was throttling many accounts and did not scale. We are working on an alternative based on the Analytics marketplace extension.

So please share the VSTS account URL with us, I will deliver your information to PG to investigate this issue.

Hi, thanks for the information, here is our account: crytex.visualstudio.com

Hi @stuartbean,

Please see below infomration I got:

The Analytics OData endpoint has been enabled on the account.

We do not recommend using the Power BI Content Pack(being deprecated on Nov 15) or the Power BI Desktop Connector at this time.   Using OData endpoint directly in Power BI allows for a lot more flexibility on what data is included in the model and that approach is also much less likely to be impacted by any upcoming changes.

We are working on a new feature we are tentatively calling “Analytics Views” which is designed to make getting your data into Power BI much easier, which will replace the existing Power BI Desktop connector. We expect to ship this new feature in the January timeframe.

The customer will need to make sure the Analytics Extension is installed before using OData - https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=ms.vss-analytics.

Examples of how to use the Power BI extension (VSTS.Feed) can be found here: https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/docs/report/powerbi/data-connector-functions

A general overview of the OData endpoint can be found here: https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/docs/report/analytics/overview-analytics-service

A more detailed overview of the aggregations we support can be found here: https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/docs/report/analytics/aggregated-data-analytics.
