Accessing Online Data

Hi,

 

I have a MariaDB database installed on a server hosted in the cloud.

 

I have a report generated on Power BI desktop, and when i publish this report to the cloud, access to this database is lost. I believe i need a "On-Prem Gateway" to establist the database connection to the report.

 

Seems odd, that i need to find a computer somewhere to run the gateway, to then connect to the cloud DB for Power BI online......why can the Online Power BI report conenct direct......anyway.

 

The other option is to sync my MariaDB with an online data warehouse, which i believe PB online can connect directly to. So, my database is only small......25Mb, but has updates in real time.

 

Any idea what the most cost effective datawarehouse is, as from what ive seen, Azure, Amazon etc seem very expensive, and my requirements are quite basic?

 

Any advice appreciated......

    Hi uthall ,

    Actually, you could install the on-premises gateway on the device which you installed the Power BI Desktop, but we will recommend installing the gateway on a device that can run all the time.

    In addition, if your data source is online, we could not configure the gateway and it will refresh automatically.

    For your requirement, I'm afraid that you may export your data in the online platform which is free such as OneDrive bussiness and then get data in Power BI Desktop.

    If you're good at coding, you may create the API by yourself.

    From my point, I think use gateway is the most effective for your scenario.

      Hi Cherry,

       

      So you reccomend i use a gateway?

       

      Can a gateway allow me realtime updates, or at least 60 second updates?

       

      What platform will allow me direct databse connections without a gateway in powerbi, it seems only Azure warehouse is available?

       

      I have access to PowerBI Server, is that also an option?
