Access SharePoint Data with service Account or similar

We have some SharePoint Content (Files and List) which we are consuming in Power BI for creating reports which are published in Power BI Service.

How do we make the connection to the sharepoint content in terms of credentials?

A personal account can't be a sustainable solution for production (password change, leaving company e.g.). What is the recommended solution? Is it possible to somehow grant access to the Power BI Service itself?

Thank you.

Hi - I'm not sure on best practice etc but I can confirm how we overcame this issue. We:

  • created a cloud-only service account user in M365 which had read-only access to the Sharepoint site
  • stored the credentials for that user in our team's shared password manager
  • used this service account in data source credentials for that Sharepoint site within PowerBI

Works for us!

Hope that helps,

Matt

In our company there is a policy that the password has to be changed every 3 months. Do you have similar obstacles?

Not for an account designated as a service account. We do need to re-authenticate regularly though.
