AD LDS for non-domain joined server with SSAS?
Hello,
I am really new to the powerBI and I am searching for a help.
CompanyA have a SQL server with SSAS which is a data source for powerBI service and on-premise data gateway is installed there. The server is stand-alone, non-domain joined, without AD installed.
Some of the users from CompanyA, got a windows accounts created on the server, and are also part of Administration group for SSAS.
After configuring the gateway in powerBI service, the status is : for gateway itself : Online: You are good to go. and for Data source : Connection successful, however I am not able to connect and get a data from SSAS - I think that some user mapping needs to be done - is it correct?
The other problem is that CompanyB is inside different domain would like to use the same datasource from that server. I have read that for more domains, more on-premises gateways need to be used.
What is the best solution to authenticate the users from CompanyB to use the SSAS as datasource in their powerBI service? I do not want to create a windows account on that server for each user from that company. Would AD LDS and creating users there do the work? Is it even possible? What would be the best solution?
Thanks a lot.

Rock, meet hard place. Hard place, meet rock.
There is (currently) no credentials pass through option for SSAS sources. Either Windows or OAuth2. Most likely not something you can implement in your setup.

Hello lbendlin,
Thank you for your response, I thought that will be not possible but just wanted to ask and to be sure since I am new to PBI...
Lets say the server cannot be joined to a domain. The most simple way for CompanyA is to create the windows accounts/users and then map them in PBI? What about the CompanyB? In this setup also the only way is to create windows account/users for them, install the new on-premise gateway and map them in PBI?
Is there any other solution for this setup? Or if we can somehow join the server to a domain, would it change something?
EDIT : Worth to mention that server is external.
Thank you.

I think it's even worse. You need TWO SSAS servers, and each of them needs to be joined to their respective domain. Won't work with external servers.
