AI powered Power BI reporting skills is a collection of multiple skills that enables AI agents to automate report creation, from designing pages to publishing to Fabric. Now available through the Power BI authoring plugin in Skills for Fabric—a first-party catalog of agent skills for Microsoft Fabric optimized for GitHub Copilot CLI—this capability allows agents to author reports through natural language, write schema-correct PBIR files, reload Power BI Desktop, capture screenshots, and iteratively refine reports for a seamless, end-to-end authoring experience.
To install the Power BI Authoring plugin:
1. Register the Skills for Fabric marketplace in your AI client (e.g. Github Copilot CLI)
/plugin marketplace add microsoft/skills-for-fabric
2. Install the Power BI Authoring plugin
/plugin install powerbi-authoring@fabric-collection
Let’s dive in and see some example capabilities that you can do with this feature:
- Create a report from scratch.
- Modify the report pages based on a prompt.
- Modernize a report with better design.
Create a report from scratch
The powerbi-report-authoring skill enables natural-language authoring of Power BI report definitions in the PBIR format used by PBIP projects.
For example, you can ask agent to “Create a report with a page called Opportunities that has four KPIs for metrics: Revenue Won, Revenue in Pipeline, Revenue Lost and Opportunities. Add slicers for risks levels, Closing (Days), Quantity and Status. Add a table with columns Opportunity, Submitted, Qty, Revenue, Discount, Status, Risk and Days.
Add another page called Collabs which has four KPI cards each showing metrics: Offers Initiated, Offers in Review, Offers Accepted and Offers Declined. Add two slicers to filter the page based on the offer status and country. Add a table with columns profile, Name, Company, Country, Status and Comment. Add Brand CONTOSO OUTDOORS on both the pages.”
This prompt creates a report page with the following visuals:

The skill also works with Modeling MCP server and the semantic model authoring skill, where you can connect to the Modeling MCP server and use the skill to create a semantic model and then report authoring agent skill to create a report over it. Learn more about the Modeling MCP server in our documentation.
Modify an existing report
You can ask the agent to modify an existing report to match your requirements. You can share a reference image or explain your requirements in a prompt.
For example, you can ask agent to “Format the report theme based on the reference image <reference image.png>. Also add logo <logo.png> on the left side of both the pages”.

The agent generates the following report pages based on the example reference image and logo:

Modernize a report with better design
You can also use the skill to modernize and improve poorly designed reports using the latest design principles.
You can ask agent to “modernize the overall design and usability. Create a clean, editorial-style landing page with a clear title, summary and key metrics. Add intuitive page navigation for all report pages. Apply a consistent, polished visual theme. Improve layout and alignment across pages to reduce clutter and make insights easier to scan.”

Behind the scenes, the agent leverages the powerbi-report-design skill to create a structured design debrief—outlining best-practice principles for the report—which is then passed on for implementation.
Instead of guessing whether a chart was rendered correctly, the agent sees the actual output, reviews it, and iterates by using a Desktop bridge to capture screenshots of the latest report pages. The Desktop bridge also allows the agent to reload the changes in your already-open Power BI Desktop instance automatically—without needing to close and reopen the app between iterations.
Full agentic ecosystem
The powerbi-report-authoring skill is designed to work as part of a skill ecosystem. Together with the Modeling MCP Server and semantic-model authoring skill, it delivers an end-to-end Power BI solution.
