In this blog, we’ll explore how to create a custom tooltip and configure it in Power BI. Custom tooltips enhance the user experience by providing additional insights when hovering over visuals.
Here, along with the sales amount on a clustered column chart, we want to display the total quantity and quantity by product category.
Let’s get started!
To create a custom tooltip, follow these steps:
Add a new page to your report.
Change the size of the page to Tooltip in the Visualization pane.
Go to Visualization pane > Page Information and enable the option ‘Allow use as tooltip’.
Customize the tooltip page by changing the background and adding all the visuals needed for your tooltip.
In this example, we:
Added a Card visual to show the Total Quantity.
Included a Clustered Bar Chart displaying Quantity by Product Category.
This page will act as our tooltip.
Now, apply the tooltip to the desired visual:
Select the visual where you want to add the custom tooltip.
Navigate to Visualization pane > Format visuals > General.
Enable the Tooltips option.
In Type, select Report Page.
Under Page, choose the tooltip page you created (e.g., "Custom Tooltip").
To ensure the tooltip page does not appear in the report navigation for end users:
Right-click on the tooltip page and select Hide Page.
Once configured, the custom tooltip will appear whenever you hover over the bars in the clustered column chart. This allows users to see the total quantity and quantity by product category along with the sales amount.
By creating a custom tooltip, you can enrich your Power BI reports with additional insights, enhancing user interaction and data exploration.
I hope you found this blog helpful! 🚀
