Beginner To Advanced RANKX Techniques For Power BI

RANKX is an incredibly powerful DAX function you can utilize inside of Power BI to showcase ranking type results or to discover insights based on any ranking of a particular result.

There are many ways you can utilize RANKX. That's a key consideration I want to leave you with before I dive into some specific examples and particular ways you can utilize this function.

In this first tutorial, I look to cover several things that need to be understood well for you to utilize RANKX successfully. All the key insights and understandings that are required to comprehend what is being calculated when you are seeing results where RANKX is incorporated in the formula.

To understand how RANKX works from a calculation perspective, you will then need to start implementing it in a number of different ways.

This particular example is advanced but I'm hoping that by reviewing this you see the potential of how far you can take the RANKX formula.

I showcase how you can dynamically group data or results based on their ranking. So, if you want to group your customers based on what ranking they have by sales you can do this with an effective formula. It is a really powerful analytical and visualization technique you can use inside of your Power BI models.

In this last example, I want to showcase what I mean by the term 'Ranking Tables'.

Sometimes you might only want to show results in a particular table that is above or below a certain ranking. For example, you want to show your products but you only want to see the top five you sell on a particular table and the sales they are producing. You can utilize this technique to dynamically showcase this visual effectively.

The other great thing about this technique is that you can reuse it. So not only can you showcase your top five sales for your products but you can also bring in other metrics based on those products and then only show these for that particular grouping of products. We are using products in this example, but you may choose any particular dimension in your model.

Ranking tables are really powerful visualization technique that combines a lot of the key concepts around the RANKX function. So, there's definitely a lot to dive into within this example and a lot of ways you can utilize it across your own data scenarios which you may be working on.

Hopefully, this post and all these tutorials have given you some great ideas on how you can utilize RANKX. It's an incredibly versatile function that has a lot of applications for great analysis inside of Power BI.

If you can understand this well, then there are definitely many ways you can showcase and highlight informative information that will add value to the consumers of your reports.

All the best.

Sam
