The prelim round is complete, and wow, was the competition fierce. Every entry brought a unique perspective, and the judges deliberations were tougher than we expected.

The contest brief asked participants to design for data journalists, editors, and content producers. We were looking for reports that surface patterns, contrasts, and outliers, spark stories, and make data explorable, credible, and visually compelling. We scored based on insightfulness, creativity, innovation, and accessibility - and we also factored in the communityโ€™s kudos (likes).

We noticed that people got creative with the data! We had folks bring in additional data (from wealth to Eurovision), narrow down the dataset to particularly insightful years, and create data explorers with more interactivity than we imagined! We know how long it takes to design and build such masterpieces - and to everyone who participated - we want to say THANK YOU for making this the best data community!

Finalists win a FabCon Vienna conference ticket, accomodation, and a spot on stage to compete for the title of World Champion!

After much debate, weโ€™re excited to announce the four finalists moving forward, in no particular order:

  • Daniel Guevara: Europe by the Numbers

Daniel drew the judges in with his clean design, and the more we explored this report, the more we liked it. Daniel's report provided clear, explorable metrics and allowed users to navigate easily between pages and choose their own data exploration path. It fit the brief and had a nice mix of interactivity and storytelling. Check out the Insights Gallery tab and explore for yourself!

  • Paulo Grijo: Europe in Motion

Judges loved Paulo's clean, visually appealing, and innovative design, featuring engaging animations and interactive elements. The head-to-head comparison and creative tree map were standout features that enhanced data exploration. This report was fun to explore and very well executed!

  • Aanor Le Gouic: Does Cultural Activities Make Europeans Happier?

Judges loved Aanor's take on the data. She reviewed and highlighted a meaningful overlap in the data and then explored the impact of additional impactful events, like COVID19. She also created a really neat way to interact with and display outliers, which was really innovative!

  • Yasuteru Kashu: A Data Lens on European Wellbeing

Yasuteru's entry stood out for its thoughtful approach to data exploration. Judges loved how it provides clear context for each metric, making it easy to understand the story behind the numbers.  The judges also appreciated the info buttons sprinkled throughout the report, offering helpful explanations right when you need them. And the ability to choose your own X and Y axes for correlation analysis is a game-changer - empowering users to uncover unique insights and patterns across European well-being.

Congratulations to our finalists, and thank you to everyone who entered and voted.

We'd also like to recognize a few other outstanding entries! These competitors didn't make it to Vienna, but their entries are absolutely worth a look! Please take a look at the Judges Favorites!
