Over the past few years, Power BI has evolved rapidly. What started as a simple reporting tool is now a powerful platform used by analysts, business users, and even developers. But with so many new features being added every few months, it's easy to miss out on what can actually make your day-to-day reporting easier. This blog is not about heavy DAX or complex setups. It's a simple round-up of practical Power BI tricks I’ve found genuinely useful and things that save time, improve performance, or make reports more user-friendly. If you’re someone who enjoys working smart, you might find a few gems here.
1. On-Object Interaction – Format Without Searching Everywhere
With the latest Power BI updates, you can now edit visual elements like titles, axis names, and data labels right on the visual itself. No need to open the format pane every time. It’s especially useful during live sessions or when making quick changes on the fly.

Field Parameters allow your users to switch between different measures or dimensions using a slicer. For example, instead of creating multiple visuals for Region, Product, or Category, you can manage everything with one dynamic chart. It helps keep reports clean and flexible.

3. Custom Tooltips – Show More, Without Crowding
Instead of showing plain tooltips, you can now create full report pages as tooltips. So when a user hovers over a chart, they can see a mini KPI card or a trend chart in a popup. It’s a smart way to provide more insights without cluttering your report page.

If your report is lagging, this tool can help. It breaks down how long each visual and DAX query takes to load. Once you identify what’s slowing things down, you can clean up your measures or visuals accordingly.

Using bookmarks with buttons, you can allow users to toggle between pages, reset filters, or show/hide sections. It gives your report a clean, guided experience, almost like an app. And it’s easier than it sounds once you try it.

6. Paginated Reports – When You Need PDFs, Not Dashboards
Sometimes, dashboards aren’t enough. For things like monthly statements, invoices, or print-ready reports, paginated reports are ideal. You can design them in Power BI Report Builder and publish them directly to the Power BI Service—no SSRS server needed.
7. Copilot – Ask Questions, Get Visuals
This is one of the most exciting features in Power BI today. You can ask Copilot natural language questions like “Show me monthly profit trend” and it will build the visual for you. It speeds up exploration and helps non-technical users get what they need.

You can connect your Power BI reports with Power Automate to schedule emails, export PDFs, or send alerts when KPIs cross thresholds. It’s a big time-saver and adds automation to your analytics workflows.

When you’re working with large models, managing measures and formatting can become tedious. Tabular Editor helps you handle it all faster—whether it’s creating calculation groups or organising measures neatly into folders. It’s a must-have tool for serious Power BI developers.

10. Relative Date Filters + DAX – Set It and Forget It
Instead of filtering dates manually each time, use DAX and relative date slicers to show “Last 30 Days”, “This Month”, or “Year to Date” data that updates automatically. It keeps your reports fresh without extra effort.

All of these features are simple to implement and save hours in the long run. Whether you're building for leadership teams, operations, or external clients, these tricks will improve both performance and user experience.
Try a few of them in your next project and if you’ve got your own favourite Power BI shortcut or feature, do share in the comments. Always happy to learn from the community.
