Description: MARCO RUSSO (SQLBI) - My Power BI Report is Slow: What Should I Do? You created a wonderful Power BI report, but you wait too much time when you open it. Changing a slicer selection is also slow. Where should you start analyzing the problem? What can you do to optimize performance? This session will be purely Q&A for those that have watched Marco's session on their own time (link in Discussion). You must post your questions and performance issues you would like Marco to answer in the Discussion thread. Please make sure to show up if you will be posting in case your submission is picked! This video session will guide you in analyzing the possible reasons for a slow BI report. Using Power BI Performance Analyzer and DAX Studio, you will determine whether you should change the report layout or if there is something in DAX formulas or the data model is responsible for the slow response. At the end of this session, you will understand how to locate a performance bottleneck in a Power BI report so that you will focus your attention on the biggest issue. Event ID: 9214

Speaker: Marco Russo
Speaker Bio: Marco is a business intelligence consultant and mentor. He first started working on Analysis Services in 1998, back when Analysis Services was known as OLAP Services. A veteran of end-to-end projects, Marco wrote several books with Alberto Ferrari about Power BI, Analysis Service, and Power Pivot. They also regularly write articles and white papers that are available on sqlbi.com. Marco is a Microsoft MVP and an SSAS Maestro, the highest level of certification on Microsoft Analysis Services. Today, Marco focuses his time with SQLBI customers, traveling extensively to train and consult on DAX and data modeling for Power BI and Analysis Services. Marco also teaches public classes worldwide. Marco is a regular speaker at international conferences like Microsoft Ignite, PASS Summit, and Sqlbits. He also enjoys delivering evening sessions at local user groups during his trips. When he is not working, you can find Marco fine tuning his expertise of Neapolitan pizza or test driving electric cars.

    Hey gregpetrossian,  hopefully this is still going ahead (Unfortunately I may not be able to make it though as the time zone is a little out of whack for me)

     

    Great overview of the options available in optimising our reports. I have two separate questions:

     

    1. When running Performance Analyzer in Power BI, do we need to first save the report on a blank page, reopen and then navigate to the page we want to analyse? Or is the "Refresh visuals" action good enough to analyse the relative performance of the visuals on the page?
    2. What are your top tips for new Power BI users for creating good performing DAX queries (especially if they have limited DAX knowledge)?

     

    Also vote for Multi-row cards to have a vertical/horizontal orientation option (Microsoft Idea  · Multi Row Card)

        Hi gregpetrossian,

         

        I have a sort of discussion type question regarding the Table vs. the Matrix visual. How much data is too much? And more importantly--how do you handle it when your audience wants you to fill either one with so many columns that you're scrolling right forever? I know how I handle it but would love to hear from others.

    Hi Marco, are there any performance differences (strengths/weaknesses) between Live Connect and the new DirectQuery on Analysis Services?  Or aspects of tuning these new mixed mode datasets we should keep in mind?
