Copy Activity Fails but Shortcut works

Hello Everyone,

I have scenario where i have to copy AWS S3 files to Fabric lakehouse. Connection creation is sucssessful but copy is throwing an error.

AWS S3 is behind the firewall and not publickly available. So I have used data gateway to connect to AWS S3 and connection is established but while copying it throws error.

"Underlying connection was closed. Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TSL secure channel."

But with the same credential we can see the data by creating shortcuts. So wondering how it is possible to do shortcut and read data but cant connect via data pipeline copy activity.

Thank you  for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

I understood your issue. Shortcuts work because Fabric can directly read the S3 files, but when you run a pipeline copy through the gateway, it needs a proper SSL/TLS certificate to build a secure connection. If the certificate on your S3 side is not trusted by the gateway like self-signed, expired, or blocked by firewall, the copy will fail with that error.

Please check once if the SSL certificate used by your S3 endpoint is valid and trusted on the gateway machine. You may need to install the certificate on the gateway server or allow the endpoint through firewall so that the secure connection can be made.
