Power BI APP Question

    Hi ericjo ,

     

    Currently, Power BI does not support linking reports across workspaces each report copy is a separate object. This is confirmed in Microsoft’s documentation on Power BI workspaces, which states that datasets can be reused across workspaces, but not reports.

    As for future enhancements while we don’t have visibility into Microsoft’s roadmap, features like linked reports or report versioning across workspaces have been requested in the Power BI Ideas forum. You can follow or upvote similar ideas here: Fabric Ideas - Microsoft Fabric Community

    I recommend keeping an eye on the Power BI blog and roadmap pages for announcements regarding workspace/report management improvements.

Hi ericjo ,

You're right, "Viewer" on the workspace isn't always enough.

Here's the likely issue:

Even if they can see the report in the app, users also need permission on the dataset itself. "Viewer" on the workspace doesn't automatically grant "Build" permission on the underlying data.

To fix:

  1. Check Dataset Permissions: Make sure your users have "Build" permission on the dataset linked to the report, regardless of which workspace it lives in (the copied one, or an external one).

  2. Dataset Location: If you copied the report, did you also copy the dataset to the consolidated workspace? If not, users still need access to the original dataset's location.

It's almost always about access to the data, not just the report container.
